Carpet Size Guide for Indian Homes: Living, Bedroom & Dining
Posted by AMIT TIWARI

Bought a beautiful carpet, rolled it out, and it looked like a doormat in the middle of the room? You’re not alone. It’s the most common mistake we see. This carpet size guide will help you pick the right size for your living room, bedroom or dining area the first time.
Quick answer: For most Indian homes, a 5×8 ft carpet suits small living rooms and bedrooms, a 6×9 ft or 8×10 ft carpet fits medium rooms with a 3-seater sofa, and a 9×10 ft or custom-size carpet works best for large halls and 6-seater dining tables. Always leave 1 to 1.5 feet of bare floor around the carpet’s edges.
How do you measure a room for a carpet?

Measuring takes five minutes, and it saves you from a costly return.
- Measure the full length and width of the room in feet.
- Subtract 2 to 3 feet from each side. This leaves the border of floor that makes a room look finished.
- Mark that size on the floor with masking tape, or spread an old bedsheet folded to that size.
- Walk around it for a day. If it feels cramped or tiny, adjust before you buy.
Here’s a tip from our team in Bhadohi: when you’re stuck between two sizes, pick the bigger one. A carpet that’s slightly large makes a room feel cosy. A carpet that’s too small makes even expensive furniture look scattered.
What size carpet is best for a living room?
The right living room carpet should connect your sofa, chairs and coffee table into one seating area. At a minimum, the front legs of your sofa should rest on the carpet.
| Living room size | Recommended carpet size | How it sits |
|---|---|---|
| Small (around 10×12 ft) | 5×8 ft | Under the coffee table, touching the sofa’s front edge |
| Medium (around 12×16 ft) | 6×9 ft or 8×10 ft | Front legs of sofa and chairs on the carpet |
| Large (15×20 ft and above) | 9×10 ft or custom size | All furniture fully on the carpet |
If your sofa is L-shaped, measure along both arms of the L. Most L-shaped sets need at least 8×10 ft so the carpet doesn’t disappear under the corner.
What size carpet should you put under a bed?

A bedroom carpet has one job: your feet should land on something soft when you get out of bed.
- Queen bed in a 10×12 ft room: a 6×9 ft carpet placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed, leaving the bedside tables on the floor.
- King bed in a 12×14 ft room or larger: an 8×10 ft carpet works well, with about 1.5 to 2 feet showing on both sides of the bed.
- Small bedroom or tight budget: two runners, one on each side of the bed, give you the same soft landing for less.
Avoid placing a small carpet only at the foot of the bed. It covers the one spot where you rarely stand.
How big should a dining room carpet be?
This is where most people go wrong. When a chair is pulled back, all four of its legs should still be on the carpet. Otherwise the chair catches on the edge every time someone sits down.
The simple rule: add about 2 feet on every side of your dining table.
| Dining table | Recommended carpet size |
|---|---|
| 4-seater (around 3×4 ft) | 8×10 ft |
| 6-seater (around 3×6 ft) | 9×10 ft or custom size |
| Round 4-seater | Round carpet or a custom size |
Choose a medium pile for dining areas. Shaggy carpets look lovely but catch crumbs and make chairs harder to move.
What about hallways and odd-shaped spaces?
For corridors and kitchens, a runner is the right choice. Leave about 4 to 6 inches of floor on each side so it doesn’t look squeezed. For round tables, reading corners and pooja rooms, a round carpet softens the square lines of the room. If your space has an unusual layout, an irregular shaped carpet can follow it in a way a rectangle never will.
Standard sizes vs custom size: which should you choose?
Standard sizes are ready faster and suit most rooms. At Carpet Point, our designs come in 5×8, 6×9, 8×10 and 9×10 feet, and ready-stock carpets are delivered in 5–6 days.
A custom size makes sense when:
- your room is long and narrow, or has pillars or alcoves,
- you have a large hall or an L-shaped sofa,
- you want the carpet to fit exactly between built-in furniture.
Every Carpet Point design can be made in your exact size. Just enter the width and length in the “Need a Custom Size?” box on any product page to see the price instantly. Custom carpets are handmade in Bhadohi and delivered in 10–15 days.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular carpet size in India?
5×8 ft is the most common size in Indian homes because it fits small and medium living rooms and most bedrooms without crowding the space.
Is a 6×9 carpet big enough for a living room?
Yes, for a medium living room with a 3-seater sofa and a coffee table. Place it so the sofa’s front legs rest on the carpet.
Should the carpet go under the sofa?
At least the front legs should. This links the sofa and the carpet visually and stops the carpet from sliding.
How much floor should show around a carpet?
Leave about 1 to 1.5 feet of floor on each side in living rooms and bedrooms. In very large halls, 2 feet looks balanced.
